They consist of articulated metal links and form a strong connection. They are used to attach pocket watches and neck watches.
This watch chain is made of tombac (copper-nickel alloy with increased nickel content) and is a snake chain with two decorative parts and ceramic trimmings.

Watch chains 2
Chains are also used in clockwork. They serve e. g. to compensate for the decreasing spring force of the lift by pulling on a larger radius of a bevel gear and thereby compensating for the torque (force x radius or lever arm = torque).
This chain resembles a very scaled down bicycle chain. For size comparison, the chain is photographed with a match head. They were often made by child labor.
